What’s been the main highlight so far?
Geoff: Staff networks are powerful when membership is engaged and working together. To build this, we have had different members chairing our meetings which allowed a more diverse range of voices to be heard and provided experience running a meeting. I am so proud of the network for taking up the mantle to lead itself, identify inequalities and try to make things better for LGBTQ+ people.
Is there anything else you feel particularly proud of?
Geoff: Protected characteristic declaration rates are an important part of reporting for NICE.
Two network members performed a systematic review looking at why people do or do not disclose protected characteristics in the workplace.
This review was used not only to inform recommendations around discussions of protected characteristics but also to have a conversation about creating a work culture built on trust.
What are your ambitions for 2023?
Jeremy: We want to continue to embed intersectionality into our approach – and are being mindful of how we do this moving forward. Also, a lot of cool work has been going on around identifying LGBTQ+ topics of interest to people so that we can create a programme of events that reflects what people are interested in.
Finally, we want to continue to increase visibility (where we can, and it is safe to do so) and to celebrate sexual and gender minority identities. Last year, NICE attended Manchester Pride for the first time - I do not know where this year will take us but I’m ready to go!
